How to shop for your Florida Homeowners Insurance policy

A story that we hear all too often is 'One day I checked the mail and got a letter from my homeowners insurance company telling me they are canceling my policy'. This happens for a variety of reasons and many times homeowners are left confused and wondering where to turn for the best insurance that will be reliable. Consider the following when choosing to purchase your next Florida homeowners insurance policy.

Choose a financially strong company

Remember that the loudest companies are not always the best companies. There are many financially strong companies out there that don't spend a great deal of money on TV or Radio advertising. There are many companies that you as a consumer may not even be aware of. An independent insurance agent can help you evaluate an insurance company and help you decide which one is best. Do you know how much reinsurance your insurance carrier has? Reinsurance is insurance for the insurance companies. Are they financially strong enough to withstand major disasters without going bankrupt? Florida Homeowners insurance is a risky business because of the storms that we are subject too, you want to make sure whatever company you choose will survive the storms, literally.

Get an outside opinion

The value of working with an independent insurance agent is that they are not captive to any one Florida homeowners insurance company. Independent agents can shop multiple companies and do the research for you. Independent Florida homeowners insurance agents are licensed and trained professionals who understand the complicated language of insurance. They can help you to identify ways to save on your Florida homeowners insurance that you may not of been aware of. They also know which companies are more likely to insure certain risks. Some companies like dogs, some don't. Some will take older homes, some won't. Are you near the beach, some companies don't like that – especially for Florida homeowners insurance. There are many questions that insurance agents have to answer everyday, but there job is to find a policy for you, no matter where.

Make sure you get enough coverage

At the end of the day saving money on your Florida homeowners insurance policy may seem like a good idea, but its not if you are not properly covered. Insurance is about being taken care of when a time of crisis happens. Under insurance is a very common problem. If you have a $20,000 painting in the house make sure you have enough insurance to cover it. Make sure that your policy covers the replacement cost of your house or unit. Again its not worth $100 per year if you lose everything and don't have enough money to get it replaced. Don't rely on the purchase price or appraised value for determining replacement cost coverage, this may not be enough money. In addition, don't be afraid to switch your Florida homeowners policy to another company to get adequate coverage.
